Malawi Boosts Food Safety and Export Quality Using Nuclear Science

Malawi is strengthening its food safety system through the integration of nuclear science technologies, significantly improving consumer protection and export capabilities. The Malawi Bureau of Standards (MBS), benefiting from support by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) and the Joint FAO/IAEA Centre, has upgraded its laboratory facilities with state-of-the-art nuclear and isotopic testing equipment. This development allows Malawi to detect a broader spectrum of food contaminants, including radionuclides, mycotoxins, pesticides, and veterinary drug residues. Products crucial to Malawi’s economy like tea, milk, and macadamia nuts stand to benefit from enhanced testing accuracy, ensuring they comply with international export requirements. The... IAEA Confirms Safe Levels in Fukushima ALPS-Treated Water Discharge into Ocean

Japan’s Tokyo Electric Power Company (TEPCO) has commenced releasing the 19th batch of ALPS-treated water from the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Station into the ocean. The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) independently sampled the water and confirmed tritium concentrations are far below the government’s operational limit of 1,500 becquerels per liter. The water is discharged through a one-kilometer undersea tunnel to minimize environmental impact. Since the initial release began in August 2023, roughly 140,500 cubic meters of treated water have been discharged. The ALPS system removes most radioactive isotopes except tritium, which is considered less harmful at low concentrations. Continued... [Continue Reading]

IAEA Calls for Restraint Amid Military Strikes Near Iran's Bushehr Nuclear Power Station

The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) has urged all parties to exercise maximum restraint following alarming reports of military strikes near Iran's Bushehr nuclear power station. This facility, which contains substantial amounts of nuclear material, poses significant risks; any damage could trigger severe radiological contamination, with ramifications for extensive areas in Iran and beyond. The IAEA's Director General, Rafael Grossi, expressed profound concern over the potential consequences of military actions in such proximity to the functional nuclear site. According to Grossi, the dangers posed by military operations near the Bushehr plant are both serious and far-reaching. The IAEA's authoritative statement... [Continue Reading]
